Living in a climate that is suitable for growing year round has been the greatest blessing for learning and experimenting. In the five short months of living here I have had numerous experiences with different insect invasions. Ants in particular. They haven't seemed phased by any of the deterrents I have tried. I am an avid believer in organic gardening so I have tried to use only the safe methods. I tried ground orange peels, coffee grounds, cinnamon, baby powder, borax traps with almost no possitive results. The ants have successfully eaten all of my pumpkins, watermellon and invaded my potatoes. They don't seem to bother the tomatoes, kale, lettuce, or tarrow.
My goal is to produce a garden that will sustain a family of four. So far we have eaten plenty but I am always experimenting with crops that will be more successful and creating less work in the garden. I love square foot gardening because it allows you to use all of your space effectively and it elliminates the weed problem. I also combine a bit of lasagna gardening where you layer different compost materials straight onto the ground and let it naturally decompose. This bring in all those lovely worms to airate the soil!
