After returning from a trip to Maui I gained some much needed perspective for living either on the Big Island,HI or Maui. We currently live on the Big Island with our two young children. We have experienced some frustrations trying to raise our children here. The options for schooling for middle and lower class families leaves something to be desired. There are no shortages of great private schools but that is exclusive to those who can afford it and honestly, I think that is a very small percentage of the population here. Mind you, we live on the Hamakua Coast. If we lived in Hilo or Kona maybe our optiions would be better but then there is the VOG and who knows what it is doing to our health to breathe in this toxic air. The other issure with living on the Big Island and trying to raise a family, is the driving. You have to travel a considerable distance to do almost anything.
We spent a few days traveling around Maui to see what this island has to offer for families and was pleasantly suprised. Choices of schools were fairly broad for all different income levels and areas of the island. Cosco is centrally located which means practically that is is at farthest, not more than a 30 minute drive. The adventure seeking activities such as whale watching trips, renting snorkeling or scuba gear, surf boards and the like are much more affordable than the ones available on the Big Island. And food. . . much more affordable. Rentals are about the same cost as on the Big Island. But my main focus was driving time and distance. After living on the Big Island and dealing with living about half of our lives in our car, I can tell you I was thrilled to drive on Maui. We never spent more than 20 minutes getting from place to place. There are also are many more nice little shops to see in quaint little towns.
Another thing I experience was an overall feeling of being accepted. There seemed to be much more diversity even though the island is much smaller than the Big Island. It didn't seem to matter if it was a small town or larger city area.
